Cómpeta is situated  650 metres above sea level and from its flower bedecked streets and plazas there are spectacular views of sea, countryside and mountains. Similar to many mountain towns in the beautiful Axarquía region, Cómpeta enjoys a spectacular setting in the foothills of the Sierra Almijara and Tejeda. A twenty minute drive down through the fertile Sayalonga valley takes you to the new motorway near Algarrobo. The motorway runs parallel to the coast and in one hour Málaga's international airport can be reached while the beaches at Torre del Mar and Torrox are only a half hour drive away.

Present day Cómpeta has a population of about 4500 people in the municipality, twenty percent of whom are or "were" foreigners.  It is still an active and hard working agricultural town which makes an important contribution to the industry of the province with abundant crops of olives, almonds, grapes, raisins, figs and , above all, its famous wine, Vino de Cómpeta, which is renowned worldwide. Every year on the 15th August there is  ‘The Night of the Wine (Noche de Vino). Visitors can observe how the wine used to be made and taste it while enjoying the typical songs and dances that celebrate it. In recent years a variety of tropical fruit has been successfully cultivated here. Mango, chirimoya and avocado plantations thrive on the sheltered slopes around Cómpeta. The Sierras lies to the north, snowcapped in winter, the wide blue expanse of the Mediterranean to the south. If an earthly paradise could exist the Axarquía would have to be its name.

The town has a varied selection of bars and restaurants, shops, banks, markets and all the services, medical included, needed in a modern community. One can sample local dishes or enjoy a varied selection of succulent tapas, including fresh fish and seafood brought up in the early morning from the fish markets on the coast.

Plaza Almijara, the local point and main square of the village, over which towers the belfry of the 16th century church of Nuestra Señora de La Asunción, provides an excellent place to rest and observe the tranquil unfolding of the daily affairs of the village.

This tranquil village is still, as of old, welcoming and assimilating those weary travellers who are seeking a less stressful lifestyle in one of the best climates of Europe. It weaves its magic gently and the "mañana" philosophy, anathema to those impatient ones who seek instant gratification, slowly soothes and relaxes the tension of other, more demanding lifestyles.

Cómpeta, "Sweet and Charming," this sun blessed town of dreams, the portal of a newly discovered well being, is here, now, awaiting you.

You are welcome in Cómpeta
